Competition winner Steve Dyke with Andy Rimmer, from the Kings Head pub, Upton
A Greene King competition which aimed to attract new drinkers to the golden beer category by offering pubgoers the chance to win the weight of their favourite pint in gold has found its winner.
Steve Dyke, a regular at the Kings Head, in Upton St Leonards, Gloucestershire, carried off more than £5,000 in cash after entering the Choose Gold to Win Gold competition along with thousands of others during a three-month promotion last year.
Open to customers buying any one of the Suffolk brewer’s golden beers — Greene King IPA Gold, Old Golden Hen or St Edmunds — the competition ran in Greene King pubs across the country.
Dom South, marketing director at Greene King Brewing and Brands, congratulated Mr Dyke on his win and said the promotion was a real success. “The popularity of this competition underlines exactly what the research is telling us — that the demand for golden ale is on the up.
“The golden cask market continues to grow at pace, up 18.5% in volume and 23.9% in value.Publicans have a great opportunity to capitalise on this growth by including great quality golden beers on their bar. Consumers are always on the lookout for refreshment, so stocking golden beers is a great way to entice new drinkers entering the category from lager.”
Mr Dyke, a retired policeman from Hempsted, was given the option of collecting his prize in gold or cash. Choosing cash, he is now considering what to do with his winnings. He said: “I’ve always been a real ale fan and usually like a drop of Old Speckled Hen, but on this occasion bought an Old Golden Hen for my brother and filled out the card.
“I didn’t think anything more of it until I got the call to say I’d won. We haven’t decided what to do with the cash as yet, but it’ll definitely go on something special like a holiday.”
